My Second Pupil
October 29, 2002

It has to start somewhere,
It has to start sometime,
What better place than here,
What better time than now.

I used these lines from Rage because it is time for me to start a revolution. I now have two pupils and I know there are more out there to come. Aaron stood up and said, teach me more Mark, I want to learn more about the PAC 10 and said unto him, have patience my young grasshopper the time will come. And like the crack of thunder hitting the eardrum it has happened.

Now I start my first lesson with a quote: "The Pac-10 is the only BCS conference without a Baylor, Rutgers, Vanderbilt, or Duke, or a Wake Forest, Indiana or Northwestern. There is no embarrassing basement dweller that conference brethren would like to keep locked away from public view, lest they soil reputations with ugly losses to Division I-AA outfits." Chris Fowler, ESPN.

The only one out of those teams that has made it to a big bowl was Northwestern a few years back. But what did they do, they let that coach go, Gary Barnett. What a great move for school to do, to continue its pathetic existance.

The PAC has a well rounded conference that allows each team to compete for the chapionship year in and year out. There is no embarrissing basement dweller in the PAC 10.

Now onto some of my second pupil's questions.

#1. First of all if my young grasshopper would have read the article (which I trurly believed nobody would read, considering some of the stuff I had in there earlier in the year) more carefully and studiously(or however you spell it) he would have found this near the top of the article. "the BCS has since changed, acknowledging that the point spread was a mis-guiding tool" and this "Maybe this year they will get it right, oh course they can just change their rules next year when they find out something else is wrong."

Although, this was "hidden" inside the article, I thought most people would have seen it, however, I was wrong. The majority of this article was taken from a clipping from some site I found from something that was written two years ago, around the last time Miami lost, to a PAC 10 team, to anybody for that matter. Now, as far as defense, I ask you. How many points did the three best teams in the Big 12 give up last year in the bowls? Anwser= 38, 37, and 43. And how many yards did Oregon(not that this year they are the same) give up to Colorado in the Fiesta Bowl last year, how about 29 yards. So tell me, how do you like them apples. In fact, I expect an apple next time you come to class for that ass comment.

#2. I don't think margin of victory had anything to do with the reason Notre Dame jumped Ohio State this week even both teams are still undeafeted. Oh wait, I do. And still yet, it's not that margin of victory that I don't like about the polls, its the way they are focused on how good they prejudged. This makes a team work a lot harder to finish at the top impossible, example=a team like Florida is still ranked with three losses.

#3. I have to admit I am a little West Coast biased and I admit that, but you also must admit you are a little East Coast biased. I mean come on, Iowa State may be half-way good this year. But will they go to a BCS bowl, no, will they win the BIG 12, no. Did they get their best player from Oregon State, yes. NC State plays in a conference so weak I bet nobody out there can name then all and if they can there will be numerous teams that will never have the chance to win their conference championship. In fact, here is a little history lesson for those out there who like history. Every team in the PAC 10 has won a conference championship and over the past 14 years, 8 teams have done it. Ah and Baylor, my grasshoper, you say the mighty Bears of Baylor could score 40 points in the PAC 10, even after winning their first game ever in the BIG 12. Well, your lesson for this week will be to read the recap of the game between by far the worst team in the PAC 10 last year California and your Baylor Bears. Final score= 70-22. And most those 22 where when the JV's girlfriends were playing considering the halftime score was 49-7. So if the Jordan/Kirk team can score more than Baylor, well then I assume from simple logic, they could beat Baylor, and well, maybe they can.

#4. I again urge the reader to read the entire article before complaining. This article is from 2 season ago, so any comparison is irrelivant to this season.

#5. Same as #4

#6. For this one I will save for another lesson, for you will find out, that a majority of the pollsters are from the midwest.

#7. I guess a little humor can be misunderstood, oh well, I guess from now on. Everything east of Pendleton, OR is considered East Coast by me now.

And in conclusion, I would like to thank one of my best friends Aaron for stepping up and acknowledging his willingness to learn. That's today's lesson.

The Professor is out.
