Toid's Roundup
October 8, 2002 by Toid
It's weekends like this past weekend that are mind-boggling. I had somebody come visit me and stay with me for the weekend, so my football viewing was limited. However, I assure you that my reaction to seeing the Arkansas/Tennessee game going to 6 OT's, and also hearing Florida lost, was much the same as yours. Unbelievable.
I had a nice opportunity to talk to Gugals last night, and he was telling me this. K-State beat USC, USC destroys Colorado (and Ochs head), but then Colorado comes back and beats the Wildcats. What's wrong with this picture? Nothing. It's perfect. I'm waiting for Miami to lose. Why? Because I want to see what the BCS polls do when there's not one clear pick, but there are two picks that are up for much arguing, as none of the spots are obvious. Let's take a look at Air Force. Here's a team that gets to play Notre Dame later in the season. Lose, and they don't go to a BCS bowl...win, and if they go undefeated...they go to a BCS bowl.
OU-Texas. There's supposedly a lot of "hype" around this game. When ISN'T there hype around this game? Oh yeah, OU did look like they suited up the student body instead of the football squad for the Red River Shootout, for quite a few years in the 90's. I think the question should not be, "Is OU going to win?" or "Can Chris Simms show us what he's not got?" or maybe "Is William's injury going to be a factor?". No, no, no. Sports Analysts have it all wrong. It all comes down to game day performance. Through my deep investigative excavating, I have come up with some dirt, and I know the answer. You see, Nate Hyble had a great weekend against Missouri. He threw for over 300 yards. Which for him is similar to getting to throw to a target the size of Shaq covered in stick-em all day long. So why did he have such a good game? Sure sure, you can say Missou's D isn't exactly tenacious, but let's take a look at what Trent Smith said in his weekly diary about his roommate Nate Hybl. "Nate's cut my lead to three (23-20) in Triple Play 2003" That's right. Nate had a good week playing playstation 2. Call it what you will, call my article gugal-esque, but I think playing the good ol' PS2 helps get the game time jitters out and best prepare for Game Day adrenaline-filled decisions. Everybody knows you have to beat your roommate when it comes to manly things like this. Imagine Nate Hyble losing a game of NCAA 2003 to Trent Smith (which he did quite frequently at the beginning of the season btw). That's saying right there, that a tight end knows how to call plays better than a quarterback. See the problem? Ok. So, as far as I'm concerned, the OU game will go to OU because Nate Hyble could kick Chris Simm's little white redneck butt on the PS2. Maybe if Simms stopped being the poster boy he's trying to be, and gamed it up every now and then, he would be a little quicker with his trigger finger come Saturdays and not have Superman come flying down on him when he's backed up in his own endzone, causing him to cough up another game to OU.
Aaron cleaned house last week in the picks. I want to take a moment and point out how close the picks are. I think it's going to come down to the final week and BP's. Whoever can call the upset specials better is going to play a large factor in the final score. As for a note on the final score, it will all be based on percentage because Aaron and Trojan started one week after Gugals and I did. All BP's will be added to the correctly guessed number of games, to give the final score. Let's go through a scenario. Say, Analyst Bob goes 7-3 for the year with 1 BP. His final score will be 8-3. Understand? Good. If you need an elementary course in math, please read Gugals article about the poll voting procedures and equations. After you fully understand that, you can then come back to this, and try and grasp the concept. It's tough, I know. I have faith in you.
The matchups for this week on paper look better than any other week. It's hard to say whether or not they will live up to the last few weeks in excitement. However, I do know that it will cause the polls to go beserk. Good thing we have Gugs' insight as to how to explain what will happen. I feel if the OU-Texas game is close, and low scoring, neither team should drop that much. And if Florida State pulls out the miracle win against Miami, FSU goes back to being number one. How can you have a one loss team at number one with so many 0 loss teams behind them, you are screaming...well, first of all, let's remember FSU lost to Louisville, and they DID lose technically to Iowa State, however in my mind, anybody who can show up and beat Miami, get's the #1 ranking. Period. You beat the undisputed king, you get the crown for a week.
Ok, I'm off to do something else...until next week...let's pray Hybl gets lots of PS2 reps in.
